Has Sea Pollution Increased Because Of PPE?
It seems that no matter where you walk these days, you are confronted by discarded mask after mask and PPE! It has now been found that nearly a third of beaches in the UK have been littered with discarded PPE, which means not only is it a sight for sore eyes on our streets, but could endanger our wildlife and pollute the seas. Everyday approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution manage to enter our oceans, and there may be up to 290,000 tonnes currently floating around endangering wildlife.
The sad future we face, should we continue to litter at the level we do, is that there could potentially be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050!! That's mad no? And unfortunately single use, non recyclable PPE is only adding to this problem. It has been estimated that if every person used a single use, non-recyclable face mask a day for a year, it would create an additional 57,000 tonnes of plastic waste.
What Can You Do?
There is some good news I promise! Not only are fantastic companies developing recyclable and eco-friendly PPE (we know a shop where you can buy some!) but volunteers across the UK are doing something about it. Getting involved in events like the Great British Beach Clean. People across the UK are meeting up (socially distanced of course) to safely pick litter and try and tackle ocean pollution! So far, they have picked up a massive 319 tonnes of litter from UK beaches, and they are just one of so many initiatives and groups out there. So get googling to find initiatives near you!
By making a small change, like buying eco-conscious PPE, we can help keep our oceans clean.
We're in this together gang!
Lots of Love,
